Pelotonia: Why I Ride

Founded in 2008, Pelotonia was established with the objective to fund life-saving cancer research. The model of Pelotonia remains simple: Pelotonia’s operating expenses are covered by generous funding partners so that 100% of every dollar raised by Pelotonia Riders, Virtual Riders and Volunteers goes directly to fund cancer research at The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center—Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute. Pelotonia is a three-day experience that includes a weekend of cycling, entertainment and volunteerism. In its first six rides, Pelotonia raised more than $157 million million for cancer research.

Why I Ride 2018

Welcome to my 2018 Pelotonia page and a brief understanding of what I hope to achieve by riding 100 miles to raise money to fight cancer.

I’m riding to bring a message of hope to everyone who has been diaganosed with cancer; or anyone going through life with a freind, family member, or relation, however near or distant in a similar situation.

The reality is that almost everyone is affected by a cancer diagnosis.

My message to for you is to dig deep into your heart and your soul to find the key to living joyfully and to take advantage of every opportunity in life to bring that quality to the forefront.  Be energized and committed to sharing your joy of living and you will bring a tidal wave of happiness to every relationship you have or make.

And, the power of that joyful living coursing through your veins will lift up the most distraught souls on earth and change the course of history in our battle with this dreaded disease!

To many, a cancer diagnosis brings sadness and pain, and that means cancer has been allowed to take the joy out of our living. Cancer has not and never will earn that right! If you give that right to cancer you are letting cancer win and cancer isn’t going to win. Living is winning!

My ride is about the opportunity to live. Let’s ride together and let’s win together.

Why I Ride 2015 #Crushit

Last year I wrote the following in my 2014 Why I Ride Profile . . . “This year, I will gladly ride 100 miles with inspiration from all those who have risen to meet the challenge of a Cancer diagnosis head on. I’ll ride for those that won, those that lost and those who will someday fight.”

So 2015 is about #crushing it because as fate would have it, on October 23rd 2014 these words came at me with the force of a cannon at close range: ” . . . you have a tumor in your colon, tumors in this region are often malignant. You will need a CT scan and surgery. Good luck.”

POW! Right between the eyes. No hugs, no kisses, just as straight as it gets . . . and so the journey began . . . and the troops began to assemble. By Tuesday October 28th I had completed two CT Scans identifying both a tumor in my colon and a “lesion” in my lung.

By November 7th the situation was clear: Colon Cancer and Lung Cancer!

In 2015 I’m still riding for all that I have said before. I’m riding to raise $25,000 to fight cancer, I’m riding for my dear friends and all who have fought the battle, and more than ever, I’m riding for those closest to me who I love beyond measure and who I live for! Here we go . . . and we are going to #crushit!

Why I Ride 2014

100 miles can seem like a long distance and it is the distance I will ride on my bike Saturday August 9th to raise money to support finding a cure for Cancer as part of Pelotonia ’14. 100 miles is really nothing . . . nothing . . . when you stand for the first time face to face with a friend, a relative, a loved one who is in the throes of their battle with Cancer. 100 miles is a walk in the park when you hug your frail loved one and look into their eyes and realize the burden they are carrying, and the courage they are bringing to the fight. This year, I will gladly ride 100 miles with inspiration from all those who have risen to meet the challenge of a Cancer diagnosis head on. I’ll ride for those that won, those that lost and those who will someday fight. This year I am riding for everyone. Please join me by donating to my ride and helping us defeat this disease.

Why I Ride 2013

My lifelong best friend Rob and I had planned to ride together in Pelotonia. Rob and I consulted each other at every turn in life’s journey since the age of four, and I suppose it was was sadly fitting that we were together on New Years Day 2009 when Rob received the dreadful news that his brother Mike had been diagnosed with brain cancer, a cancer that ultimately took Mike’s life two and half years later. As a result of his brother’s cancer diagnosis, Rob made it his mission to defeat the disease. An avid cyclist, Rob on his own raised $25K for the fight against cancer in the first year of his brother’s battle. Later that same year, he visited me in Columbus the weekend of the inaugural Pelotonia and immediately wanted the two of us to ride in it together. Sadly, Rob and I never got to ride together for this great cause that meant so much to him. As so often happens in life, with a young family and busy work schedules, Rob and I were unable to coordinate a ride over the following years. Then, in February 2012, Rob passed away and in many ways, his brother’s cancer and Rob’s mission to end this disease led to our losing him. He was to young and to full of life to not be here today fighting this disease. For Rob, his brother, his wonderful family and all those who have suffered with this terrible disease . . . I am riding in Pelotonia and committed to ending cancer. Please join me by donating to my ride

  1. I have been profoundly touched by learning of the loss of Rob and his brother Mike. I think of their families and friends daily as they have had to learn to navigate these years without these two men they so dearly loved!! Now to read that Bob is in the fight of his life is just unbelievable!! My thoughts and prayers go out daily to Bob, his wife and their children. Your positive attitude and actions are absolutely inspirational Bob. I pray that God our Heavenly Father will continue to give you and Heather the strength you need to get through each and every day! May God Bless You All!
